Basil seeds
Basil seeds, also known as “Sabja” seeds or tukmaria, are small black seeds extracted from the sweet basil plant (Ocimum basilicum). Similar in appearance to chia seeds, basil seeds swell and form a gel-like coating when soaked in water.
Commonly used in Southeast Asian and Indian cuisines, basil seeds offer several health benefits and culinary uses:
Beverages: Basil seeds are often added to beverages like falooda, a popular dessert drink, or mixed into lemonade, fruit juices, or smoothies. When soaked, they develop a gelatinous texture, providing a unique and refreshing quality to the drinks.
Cooling Effect: In hot climates, basil seeds are known for their cooling properties and are often added to drinks or desserts for their refreshing and hydrating effect.
Nutritional Content: Basil seeds are a good source of fiber, and they contain some essential minerals like iron, calcium, and magnesium. They are also low in calories.
Health Benefits: These seeds are believed to aid in digestion, promote satiety due to their high fiber content, and potentially help in managing blood sugar levels.
